A final Good-bye to Idaho Legend: JR Simplot

J.R. Simplot : 1909-2008

Yesterday (May 25, 2008) has been a sad day for many Idahoans after hearing the sad news of passing of JR Simplot. Simplot is a name we've known for decades as being an extremely intelligent businessman who was known for his hard work and great ability to make a deal. JR was 99 years old. He passed away with his wife Ester by his side. His death stems from a recent bout of pneumonia that he was recovering from and it was a huge suprise to many of us. I haven't ever met him myself but I've been in public places with him and I've grown up hearing all about him. He was a true gentleman who always thought of others. JR was one of the richest men in America with an estimated worth of $3.2 Billion. He started off making small deals with banks and farmers. He has greatly impacted everyone's perspective of the potato. One of the things I remember the most is that he made the deal with McDonalds to supply their frozen french fries. Simplot Corp. also deals with fertilizer and cattle and there are plants all over the world. I pray that God will give comfort to all of the Simplot family in this time of sadness. He was a great man who will be missed by everyone...
